An enhancement of the current design concepts for the improved consideration of residual stresses in fatigue-loaded welds

Abstract The consideration of residual stresses in fatigue-loaded welds is currently done only qualitatively without reliable knowledge about their real distribution, amount and prefix. Therefore, the tools which enable a more or less unsafe design concepts are mainly based on experiences doubtful assumptions. Since use explicitly determined outside welding community state art, target presented paper to show practicable way for an enhanced current tools. This not limited induced by welding, but also post-weld treatment processes like HFMI shot peening. Results extended experiments with longitudinal fillet butt low high strength steels evidently that improved fatigue approximation enables better evaluation peening as well material adjusted procedures stress relief treatments. concept shows it generally possible overcome existing extremely conservative although rules regulations may steels.
